2-1 road trip leaves club one point out of first; tough Springfield comes to town this weekend

Coming off a big win to end their last home stand, the IceCaps went on the road last week and captured two wins in three games, gaining four points and finishing the week just one point behind the Worcester Sharks for top spot in the Atlantic Division. Despite Saturday’s loss in Wilkes-Barre, the IceCaps return home to face the Springfield Falcons having won three of their last four games.

ICE-CAPSules

Rough Seas in the Atlantic: After the quarter mark for nearly every AHL club, the Atlantic Division stands as the only division to have all five of its teams sporting a .500 points percentage or better. Just four points separate the first place Worcester Sharks and the last place Providence Bruins.

Macho Man Flexing His Muscles: F Spencer Machacek turned a corner last Sunday with his three-assist performance and appears to be back on track. The Alberta native picked up a pair of assists Wednesday at Adirondack and notched another two points Saturday at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, including his first tally since scoring twice in an Oct. 23 win over Portland. Machacek has seven points (1G, 6A) in his last four games.

Kill Streak: Before allowing a late second period power play goal to the Penguins on Saturday, the IceCaps had killed off 26 consecutive penalties and had not allowed a power play marker in their previous five contests. St. John’s killed off a season-high seven penalties Wednesday at Adirondack, one shy of the club record set on Jan. 21 at Portland.

Eddie Climbing the Ranks: G Eddie Pasquale notched the second shutout in his last three outings Friday in the team’s 1-0 blanking of the Albany Devils. The sophomore netminder now ranks ninth in the league in goals-against average among qualifying goaltenders.

Injury Update: F Ray Sawada returned to the lineup Wednesday after missing the final two games of the team’s most recent home stand. However, adding to the infirmary list this week was F John Albert, who suffered an upper body  injury in the first period of Wednesday’s game and flew back to St. John’s for treatment, missing both Friday and Saturday’s contests. Currently, six IceCaps are out of action: D Travis Ramsey (broken hand), Jason King (undisclosed), Eric O’Dell (lower body), John Albert (upper body), Patrice Cormier (knee), and Hunter Tremblay (head).
