Sharks Shade IceCaps 3-2 in Overtime Posted by Dave Salter on

Budaj steady for St. John’s in setback

The St. John’s IceCaps suffered a 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of the Worcester Sharks Saturday at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.

Chase Balisy and Blair Riley scored for St. John’s, while Evan Trupp, John McCarthy and Matt Taormina – with the game winner at 2:38 of extra time – found the back of the net for Worcester.

The Sharks opened scoring at 10:49 of the first period, when Trupp followed up on a Brian Lerg solo dash to beat IceCaps netminder Peter Budaj. Balisy tied the game on the powerplay at 17:39 as he deflected a shot from the corner by Brenden Kichton past Troy Grosenick. Will O’Neill picked up the other assist. Riley gave the IceCaps a 2-1 lead, going top shelf on a breakaway at 10:28 of the second stanza. Nic Blanchard had the lone assist. However, McCarthy sent the game into overtime at 10:11 of the third period as he was left unchecked in front of the net on a Sharks powerplay. Taormina won the game as his point shot eluded Budaj at 2:38 of overtime.
