Preview: IceCaps, Sharks collide in three-game series Posted by IceCaps on


The St. John’s IceCaps resume their five game homestand as the division rival Worcester Sharks descend upon Mile One Centre for a trio of games starting on Wednesday, Nov. 13 and continuing into the weekend on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16.

The IceCaps kicked off their homestand last Friday night against the first-place Manchester Monarchs and handed the L.A. Kings’ affiliate just their second regulation loss of the season. Eric O’Dell recorded a goal and two assists, Kael Mouillierat notched a goal and an assist and Julian Melchiori added two helpers as the IceCaps downed the Monarchs 5-2.

On Saturday night, the Monarchs sought their revenge. With 14.2 seconds remaining on the clock, Brian O’Neill scored on a shorthanded breakaway to steal a 3-2 victory over the IceCaps.

The Sharks enter the three-game set having lost three straight games. The team’s last win was a 3-0 victory over St. John’s on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. Troy Grosenick made 27 saves and the Sharks got goals from Curt Gogol, Sena Acolatse and Daniil Tarasov en route to victory.

IceCaps centre Eric O’Dell, fresh off his five-point weekend against the Monarchs, enters the game as the IceCaps top scorer. His seven goals and nine assists are good for 16 points in his first 14 games, placing him in a tie for tenth in league scoring.

Sharks’ right wing Daniil Tarasov, who scored the game-winning goal against the IceCaps on Nov. 2, is Worcester’s leading scorer with six goals and five assists for 11 points in nine games played.

IceCaps’ goaltender Eddie Pasquale enters the series with a record of six wins and six losses and a 2.43 GAA and a 0.924 SV%. His 12 starts are the second-most in the league behind Manchester’s Martin Jones, who has started 13 games this season.

Sharks starting goaltender Harri Sateri has recorded one win in seven starts and has a 3.89 GAA and a 0.848 SV%.

NOTES FROM LAST GAME: IceCaps centre Patrice Cormier scored his first goal of the season with just over five minutes left in the first period before Andy Andreoff tied the game just under two minutes left in the first. Manchester grabbed the lead with just under five minutes to play in the second period with a goal from Hunter Bishop. Kael Mouillierat tied the game 4:10 into the final frame before Brian O’Neill scored on a shorthanded breakaway with just 14.2 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Monarchs. The IceCaps finished the game 2-for-5 with the man advantage, while the Monarchs scored one power-play goal on two opportunities. Eddie Pasquale stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced in recording his sixth loss of the season. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones made 31 saves to record his ninth win of the season.

PREVIOUS MATCHUPS: The Sharks and IceCaps have met just once this season, a 3-0 victory for the Sharks on home ice at the DCU Center in Worcester on Nov. 2. The Sharks and the IceCaps met four times last season with each team winning two games. The Sharks won both games in St. John’s with Daniil Tarasov scoring the game-winning goal in both games on Feb. 5 and 6, 2013. Both of the IceCaps’ victories over the Sharks last season were decided in overtime, a 3-2 victory on Nov. 3, 2012 and a 5-4 decision on Mar. 30, 2013. Eddie Pasquale played three games against the Sharks last season, winning just once and posting a 3.70 GAA and a 0.890 SV%. Harri Sateri played well against the IceCaps last season, winning two of his four games played with a 1.62 GAA and a 0.941 SV%.

SHARKS’ RECENT ACTION: POR 4 WOR 3. Tobias Rieder and Chris Brown each scored two goals as the Portland Pirates topped the Worcester Sharks at the DCU Center in Worcester on Sunday, Nov. 10. Brown scored his goals less than four minutes apart in the third period to give the Pirates the victory. James Livingston, Nick Petrecki and Adam Comrie replied for Worcester.
