Preview: IceCaps begin road trip vs. Penguins, Sound Tigers Posted by IceCaps on


After posting a 2-1-2 record on their recent five-game home stand, the St. John’s IceCaps head to Wilkes-Barre Scranton this weekend to kick off a six-game road trip with a two-game set against the Penguins on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

LAST GAME: On Saturday, Nov. 16, the IceCaps scored first but couldn’t close out the victory against the Worcester Sharks as they lost 2-1 in a shootout at Mile One Centre. IceCaps captain Jason Jaffray scored just 3:25 into the contest but the Sharks were able to force overtime and a shootout for the second consecutive game thanks to Travis Oleksuk’s game-tying goal 7:49 into the third period. Oleksuk and Brodie Reid scored shootout goals to seal the victory for the Sharks. Eric O’Dell scored the lone IceCaps shootout goal. Sharks’ goaltender Harri Sateri made 24 saves for the victory, while Jussi Olkinuora was strong in his first-ever home start, making 32 saves.


NOTES FROM LAST GAME: Scratched for the IceCaps: Cody Lampl, Ryan Schnell, Josh Lunden, Julian Melchiori, Austen Brassard… St. John’s went 1-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill… Molson Canadian Three Stars: 1. PREVIOUS MATCHUPS: The IceCaps and Penguins have yet to face each other in the 2013-2014 season. The two teams squared off four times last season, with the IceCaps earning a single point in the four contests in posting a 0-3-1-0 record against the Penguins. The last meeting between the two teams was April 14, 2013, a 5-4 overtime win for the Penguins at Mile One Centre in the IceCaps’ final home game of the season.
