Offence falls silent in 3-0 loss

The St. John’s IceCaps couldn’t muster any offence in a 3-0 loss to the Worcester Sharks at DCU Center Saturday night. With the loss, the IceCaps finished their six-game road trip with a 3-3 record.

Troy Grosenick made 27 saves for the shutout while Daniil Tarasov’s first period tally stood as the game winner.

Eddie Pasquale started his 10th game of the season and stopped 29 shots in a losing effort. Kris Fredheim, Jason Jaffray and Zach Redmond all recorded three shots apiece for St. John’s.

After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Sharks converted on a late power play to make it 1-0. Matt Tennyson’s blast from the point was tipped by Tarasov – his fourth goal in four career games against the IceCaps – to give Worcester the lead with just six seconds left in the frame.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the second but Worcester scored an insurance marker midway through the third. Sena Acolatse one-timed a bomb from the left point that went bar down on Pasquale’s glove side to make it 2-0 Sharks.

Curt Gogol iced it with an empty-netter with the IceCaps on a late third period power play.

The IceCaps return home next weekend to start a five-game home stand beginning Friday vs. the Manchester Monarchs (7:30 p.m.), when St. John’s will debut its new third jerseys.
