The Winnipeg Jets today announced they have signed defenceman Will O’Neill to an NHL contract. The St. John’s IceCaps have also signed O’Neill to an amateur tryout contract.

O’Neill, 23, played in 40 games with the University of Maine during the 2011-12 season. In that time, the left-handed defenceman recorded 33 points (3G, 30A) and 68 penalty minutes.

Through four seasons with the University of Maine, he has played in 141 games for 101 points (20G, 82A) and 263 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the seventh round, 210th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

O’Neill will report to the IceCaps this week.
