The St. John’s IceCaps will once again team with local organizers of CBC Hockey Night In Canada’s Play On! national street hockey tournament during the weekend of June 22-23rd at Memorial University campus.
St. John’s is one of 21 cities to host a stop on the national 4-on-4 street hockey festival series that has seen more than one million players participate since its inception in 2003.
The IceCaps will provide some prizes for the event and participate in both corporate and celebrity games. IceCaps President and CEO Danny Williams says the street hockey tournament is a great fit for the organization.
“The IceCaps are role models within the community for physical fitness and healthy living, which is why we are so proud to be associated with activities that promote those values,” said Mr. Williams. “This street hockey tournament promises to be an exciting weekend for young and old alike as we celebrate a great Canadian pastime. It is also a great opportunity for the IceCaps organization to connect up-close with our dedicated fans.”
Local coordinator Seamus O’Keefe says organizers are “thrilled to have the IceCaps on board once again.”
“They are great community leaders and role models for our young players,” added Mr. O’Keefe.
Open to street hockey players of all ages, skill and gender from across the province, the event will include a celebrity game at noon on Saturday, featuring a number of media personalities, NHL players and local dignitaries. Thirty eight rinks will be constructed in order to accommodate the approximately 400 teams, 2,750 players and 5,000 spectators.
Winners and finalists in the Elite, U19 and U17 divisions from Play On! St. John’s will be invited to play in the Annual Play On! National Championships which will be held in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia from September 26-28th.
