IceCaps downed by Crunch in Corner Brook
Corner Brook, NL – Philip-Michael Devos scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period as the Syracuse Crunch defeated the St. John’s IceCaps 4-1 Thursday night at the Pepsi Centre. The Crunch take a 1-0 lead in the second annual Mary Brown’s Cup exhibition series.
Syracuse got on the board first after a nice setup by Mark Barberio was finished off by reigning league MVP Cory Conacher. Barberio sent a crisp back-door pass right on the tape of a wide-open Conacher, who one-timed the puck into the virtually empty net for a 1-0 Crunch lead at 11:26 of the first.
St. John’s drew even at 17:56 on a power play after Evan Oberg was sent off for an elbow to Eric O’Dell. On the ensuing man advantage, Ben Maxwell banged home a loose puck in the crease to send the teams to the dressing room tied at one after 20 minutes.
After a scoreless second period, the Crunch took the lead at 3:16 of the third on a shorthanded marker by Devos when he slid home a pass from Alex Hutchings from behind the net. Goaltender Tyler Plante came out to play the puck and got caught out of position, leading to the eventual game-winner.
Richard Panik added an insurance goal 2:40 later when he snapped a shot past Plante from the left circle. Alex Killorn added a shorthanded empty -netter with 2:08 left in regulation to seal the victory.
Coach Keith MacCambridge split the goaltending duties between Plante and Chris Carrozzi, who made several outstanding saves in the game’s first 30 minutes. Syracuse started Dustin Tokarski and replaced him with Riku Helenius midway through the second period.
The two teams meet for Game 2 of the three-game series Friday night at the Stephenville Dome. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the pregame show getting underway at 7:00. Catch all the action at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and on the radio at 930AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador.
