JC Lipon has two assists, Eddie Pasquale makes 30 saves as St. John’s defeats Portland
ST. JOHN’S, NL — JC Lipon set up two goals and Eddie Pasquale made 30 saves to help the St. John’s IceCaps capture a 3-1 victory over the Portland Pirates Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre.
Adam Lowry, Brenden Kichton, and Jerome Samson had the goals for the IceCaps, who took the first of the three-game series against the Pirates.
Mark Visentin turned aside 37 shots for Portland, while Andy Miele registered the lone tally.
After a scoreless first period, Lowry put the IceCaps ahead 1-0 just over a minute into the second frame. Taking a heads-up feed from Lipon below the goal, Lowry fired his fourth of the season over the glove of Visentin.
St. John’s picked up where it left off in the second, when Kichton made it 2-0 just 2:51 into the third period. Keeping the puck in the Pirates’ zone as Portland tried to break out, Lipon – setting up a second-straight IceCaps’ goal – found Kichton with a backdoor feed who made no mistake in one-timing it past the Pirates’ puckstop.
Taking away Pasquale’s shutout bid, the Pirates drew within one on a goal from Miele at 12:40 of the third. With Portland organized on the attack in the IceCaps’ zone, Brandon McMillan fed the disc to Miele in the slot who fired his 14th of the year upstairs on Pasquale.
Samson restored the IceCaps’ two-goal lead just under two minutes later, however, when he waltzed in on a breakaway and slid the puck between the legs of Visentin to make it 3-1, sealing the victory for St. John’s.
