LAST TIME OUT
Jan. 5: MCH 3 STJ 2 (OT)
The Manchester Monarchs defeated the St. John’s IceCaps 3-2 at Mile One Centre. Slava Voynov potted the winner in overtime, capitalizing on a St. John’s turnover, as Manchester left St. John’s with four points, handing the IceCaps their fifth and sixth straight home losses. St. John’s got its offence from Carl Klingberg, who scored a pair of goals. Mark Dekanich stopped 29 to help his team escape with a single point.
STJ has lost six straight home games, with their last win coming back on Nov. 25 in a 6-0 victory over the Providence Bruins… Last Saturday’s loss was just the IceCaps first defeat in OT this season. The club is 4-0-1-1 in games that extend past regulation time… STJ is 12-5-1-1 in one-goal games this season… The IceCaps recalled G Chris Carrozzi from Ontario (ECHL) and signed F Josh Lunden and D Richard Petiot to PTOs. Carrozzi has posted a 13-6-0 record and a 2.85 GAA with Ontario this season, while Lunden has 16 points (6G, 10A) and 35 PIMs in 35 games. Lunden also played with current IceCap F Kevin Clark for four seasons at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. STREAKS and LEADERS
A lengthy goalless drought ended Saturday for F Carl Klingberg, who potted a pair of goals to snap a streak of 15 games without a tally. Despite his recent futility, Klingberg leads the club in plus/minus with a +5 rating and sits tied for second in goal scoring with seven… After recording just one assist in his first 26 games, D Ben Chiarot has found his offensive game of late. The rookie defenceman has four points (1G, 3A) in his last five games… D Paul Postma has four points (2G, 2A) in his last four games and is tied for the team lead in scoring with 18 points.
The Toronto Marlies dropped a 2-1 decision to the Hamilton Bulldogs Tuesday night at Copps Coliseum, snapping a three-game winning streak. F Nazem Kadri opened the scoring midway through the second period but Patrick Holland’s goal with one second left on the clock in the second period tied the score, and Gabriel Dumont’s tally with 48 seconds to go in regulation stood as the winner. G Jussi Rynnas stopped 36-of-38 shots in the loss.
With the impending start to NHL training camps this Sunday, the Marlies recalled three players and signed two more to bolster their roster heading into the weekend series. Toronto recalled forwards Andrew Crescenzi and Jamie Devane from San Francisco (ECHL), as well as G Mark Owuya from Las Vegas (ECHL). The Marlies also signed D Ryan Grimshaw and D Corey Syvret to PTOs. Owuya has been playing with recent IceCaps signee Josh Lunden in Las Vegas, while Syvret is the younger brother of Adirondack Phantoms D Danny Syvret… Marlies captain Ryan Hamilton led his club with nine points (including six goals) last season in eight games vs. STJ. Kostka and Aucoin rank second and fourth in assists, respectively. Kostka trails only Oklahoma City’s Justin Schultz for the scoring lead amongst all AHL defencemen… D Mark Fraser is third amongst AHL defencemen in penalty minutes (114)… G Ben Scrivens is tied for fourth in the AHL in wins with 14 and sits 10th in GAA (2.22)… G Jussi Rynnas went 3-0 with a 1.82 GAA and a .942 SV% last season vs. STJ.
