Curtis McElhinney stopped 46 shots and Ryan Johansen notched a goal and two assists as the Springfield Falcons defeated the St. John’s IceCaps 4-2 on Dec. 8 at Mile One Centre. Max Macenauer and Paul Postma scored power play goals for St. John’s (11-12-0-1) while Mark Dekanich made 28 saves in defeat. With the loss, the IceCaps dropped their third straight game for the first time this season.

After being outshot in their previous five contests, the IceCaps reversed that trend in a big way this past weekend, outshooting the Falcons 84-60. St. John’s tied a franchise-high with 48 shots in Saturday’s 4-2 loss, a feat they achieved twice last season… Newcomer Kael Mouillierat scored a goal in his first shift with the club last Friday night in the team’s 5-3 loss to SPR. The Edmonton-native had recorded 27 points in 19 games with the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads this season, including 14 goals… St. John’s recalled D Cody Sol from Colorado (ECHL) Monday to replace D Julian Melchiori, who suffered a broken finger in Friday’s game. Sol notched five points (3G, 2A) and a team-leading 93 penalty minutes in 21 games with the Eagles this season… The IceCaps are 6-3-0-1 in the first of back-to-back games… St. John’s is a perfect 2-0 in Tuesday games this season… Against the East Division, the IceCaps are 2-2-0-0… St. John’s is 4-2-0-1 in games following a home loss.

Nine IceCaps are currently on the injured list: Patrice Cormier (knee), Hunter Tremblay (concussion-like symptoms), John Albert (upper body), Travis Ramsey (hand), Jason King (head), Eric O’Dell (lower body), Alex Burmistrov (upper body), Jason Jaffray (shoulder) and Julian Melchiori (finger).

F Ray Sawada (2G, 1A) and D Paul Postma (1G, 2A) are riding three-game point streaks. The longest point streak by an IceCap this season is four, an active streak held by the injured Eric O’Dell. Postma has three goals in his last six contests… IceCaps leading scorer Derek Meech (3G, 10A, 13P) is tied with Binghamton’s Patrick Wiercioch for the AHL lead in game-winning goals amongst defencemen with three. All three of his tallies have come on the power play… D Zach Redmond and Max Macenauer are tied for the team lead in goal scoring with six after Macenauer potted a goal in Saturday’s loss to SPR… G Eddie Pasquale is seventh in the AHL in save percentage (.924) and tied for 13th in goals-against average (2.45).

Ryan Potulny scored two goals but Joonas Nattinen’s second-period tally gave the Hamilton Bulldogs their first lead of the game, and the visitors held it to the final horn in defeating the HERSHEY BEARS by a 3-2 score on Saturday night at Giant Center.

Like St. Johns, Hershey has struggled during its first 24 games, posting a nearly identical record of 11-12-1-0 and sitting in 11th place in the East Division after finishing fifth last season. The Bears have struggled to find the back of the net with regularity, ranking just 21st in goals for (2.67) compared to third last season (3.21). The losses of last year’s scoring champion Chris Bourque and former MVP Keith Aucoin have hurt the club and last year’s goal-scoring leader Ryan Potulny has just three tallies in 15 games. F Jeff Taffe has been one of the lone bright spots; the veteran forward sits 11th in points (23) and fifth in assists (17).

D Tomas Kundratek ranks fourth in goals (7), 12th in points (15) and 10th in power play points (10) amongst AHL defencemen… D Steve Olesky sits third amongst all defencemen in penalty minutes (91)… The Bears are 0-2-0-0 against the Atlantic Division… The Bears recalled D Brett Flemming from the ECHL’s Reading Royals Monday.
