The St. John’s IceCaps (23-31-1-4, 51 PTS) wrap up a two-game set with the Syracuse Crunch (35-17-3-4, 77 PTS) Saturday at Mile One Centre.
LAST NIGHT: SYR 3 STJ 2 (SO) | The IceCaps staked themselves to a two-goal lead but could not hang on, dropping a 3-2 shootout decision to the Syracuse Crunch Friday night in an entertaining game at Mile One. Brett Connolly scored the only shootout goal and Riku Helenius stopped all five IceCaps’ shooters to notch the win and snap the Crunch’s four-game losing streak. Jason Jaffray and Patrice Cormier scored for St. John’s while Eddie Pasquale provided an outstanding effort between the pipes, making 29 saves and denying four-of-five Crunch shooters. | RECAP | HIGHLIGHTS
PREVIOUS MATCHUPS: JAN 26: SYR 6 STJ 3 The IceCaps fell victim to the Crunch 6-3 in a wild game at Onondaga War Memorial Arena. Both teams traded blows with goals and fists in a game that saw the teams combine for nine goals and 90 minutes in penalties with three lead changes. Alex Killorn had two goals and an assist, including the game-winner early in the third period, while Richard Panik had a goal and two assists. QUICK HITS: Patrice Cormier has three goals in his last five games. Cormier earned the Mary Brown’s Hardest Working Player award for the second straight game last night… Josh Godfrey made his IceCaps debut last night… Aaron Gagnon extended his point streak to four games (2G, 2A) with an assist in the second period… Ben Maxwell has a point in five of his last six games (2G, 4A)… The IceCaps came back from four goals down to defeat the Crunch 5-4 in OT on Dec. 29… The line of Eric O’Dell, Kael Mouillierat and Carl Klingberg has combined for seven points in three games against SYR… The IceCaps dropped to 1-4 in games decided in a shootout… Norm Ezekiel, recalled from the Colorado Eagles (ECHL) on Feb. 19, made his AHL debut last week, playing in all three games. The soon-to-be 22 year old (his birthday is March 17) made his mark in last Saturday’s contest vs. MCH, dropping the gloves with Ian O’Connor for his first fight… STJ is 9-12-1-0 in the second of back-to-back games and 8-10-1-1 on Saturday nights.

RECENT ACTION: FEB 24: POR 4 MCH 3 (OT) | The Crunch were defeated by the Toronto Marlies 6-3 Wednesday at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. Syracuse outshot Toronto 43 to 19 but Marlies’ goaltender Drew MacIntyre made 40 saves and Toronto scored three power-play goals en route to victory. The Crunch managed just one goal on seven power-play chances. The loss marked the first time the Crunch have lost four consecutive games this season.
QUICK HITS: Jean-Philippe Cote was suspended for Friday’s contest as a consequence of an illegal check to the head of an opponent in a game at TOR on Mar. 6… Brett Connolly, whose parents hail from St. George’s on the west coast of NL, has 17 points in his last 18 games and scored the shootout winner last night… Alex Killorn (3G, 5PTS in two games vs. STJ this season) is currently on recall to TB. Killorn ranks 7th in rookie scoring with 38 PTS (16G, 22A)… Tyler Johnson scored his AHL-leading 30th goal of the season last night and sits 2nd in points (56)… Radko Gudas ranks 3rd in the league in PIM (207) and first in +/- rating (+30). Four of the top five skaters in terms of +/- play for the Crunch: Gudas, Ondrej Palat (on recall), Johnson, and Dmitry Korobov… Mark Barberio is 2nd among AHL defencemen in scoring with 37PTS (8G, 29A)… Vladislav Namestnikov is the son of former NHL-er John Namestnikov.. His two uncles, Slava Kozlov and Ivan Novoseltsev, both played in the NHL as well. Kozlov is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion with Detroit (97 & 98).
