The St. John’s IceCaps (18-21-1-2, 39 points) look to start a new streak Friday when they visit the Hershey Bears (20-18-2-1, 43 points) at the Giant Center. The IceCaps sit 13th in the Eastern Conference, four points behind the eighth place Bears.

Last meeting (Dec. 12): HER 4 STJ 0      
The IceCaps dropped their fifth straight game with a 4-0 loss to the Bears Dec. 12 at Mile One Centre. Braden Holtby turned aside all 30 shots he faced while Jon DiSalvatore scored for the second straight game and added an assist. Ryan Potulny chipped in with a pair of helpers. For St. John’s, Mark Dekanich got his second straight start in goal and took the loss, making 21 saves on 25 shots. Will O’Neill and Zach Redmond led the club with five shots apiece. RECAP

Jan. 23: WBS 3 STJ 0
The IceCaps were blanked 3-0 by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, snapping the team’s season-high four game point streak. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored all three goals in the first period and capitalized on a tired IceCaps team, which was playing its fourth game in six nights. Former IceCap Riley Holzapfel notched a goal and an assist while goaltender Brad Thiessen stopped all 26 shots he faced. RECAP

The IceCaps were shut out for the sixth time this season Wednesday in the club’s 42nd game. In 76 regular season games last season, the club was shut out just three times… STJ sports a 4-4-0-1 record in games played this season on a Friday… D Derek Meech (1G, 1A) and F Ray Sawada (2A) lead the team in scoring vs. HER this season with two point in three games played… G Mark Dekanich has started all three games against the Bears, posting a 2.36 GAA and a .894 SV%, but is still nursing a hamstring injury… STJ held WBS to just 18 shots Wednesday, tying the season low which was set on Nov. 3 at WOR.

Captain Jason Jaffray suffered an undisclosed hand injury in Wednesday’s game at WBS and is out indefinitely. Also injured: Jason King (head), Shawn Weller (finger), Hunter Tremblay (concussion-like symptoms), Aaron Gagnon (undisclosed), Mark Dekanich (hamstring), Ivan Telegin (undisclosed).

F Jason Jaffray’s four-game point streak (1G, 4A) was snapped in Wednesday’s loss. The captain still leads the club in scoring with 23 points (6G, 17A)… G Eddie Pasquale has started six straight games and eight-of-nine overall.


Jan. 21: WBS 2 HER 1
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory over the Hershey Bears at the 2013 Capital BlueCross AHL Outdoor Classic. Paul Thompson netted the game-winner at 1:19 of the extra session. Tomas Kundratek scored the Bears’ lone goal in the second period.

F Jeff Taffe is ninth in league scoring with 37 points and third in assists with 28… G Braden Holtby, who ranks fourth in SV% (.932) and fifth in GAA (2.14), and D Tomas Kundratek (third in goals and sixth in points amongst AHL defencemen) are both on recall to the Bears’ NHL club, the Washington Capitals… F Jon DiSalvatore leads all Bears players in scoring against the IceCaps this season with four points (2G, 2A).
