The St. John’s IceCaps look to take a stranglehold on the best-of-five Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against the Albany Devils Saturday night at Times Union Center in Albany.

St. John’s took Game 1 with a 2-1 victory Friday night after some late heroics by defenceman Ben Chairot. With the score knotted 1-1, Chiarot smashed home a one-timer from the point with 23.1 seconds left in regulation to give the IceCaps a 1-0 series lead. Michael Hutchinson turned aside 25 shots to help snag the win.

Game 1 was a tightly contested affair between the unfamiliar foes, who did not meet during the regular season. St. John’s took three-of-four back in 2012-13.

The IceCaps were without defenceman Julian Melchiori and Adam Lowry for Game 1, and their statuses for Game 2 are unknown. Melchiori is still considered day-to-day with an unspecified injury, while Lowry has been battling the flu.

The IceCaps are 0-3 all-time in Game 2 of a series, including an 0-2 mark on the road.
