Newfoundland Connection: St. John’s native James Melindy, who was signed to an amateur tryout contract at the end of last season, will get a chance to earn regualar minutes with the Pirates this season. The 6’3 blueliner notched 24 points (4G, 20A) and 90 penalty minutes in 67 games with Moncton (QMJHL) last season.

Fast Fact: The IceCaps have won three straight meetings with the Pirates including a two-game sweep at Mile One Centre last April. St. John’s is 8-7-0-1 vs. Portland all-time.
